The Fundació Barcelona Capital Nàutica has been in Brussels as part of BlueInvest Day 2026, the meeting promoted by the European Commission that brings together investors, institutions and key stakeholders in the sustainable blue economy ecosystem.
Over these days, the Foundation’s Director General, Laureà Fanega, and the Director of the DCC-SOE – Barcelona Ocean Economy office have held meetings and made contacts with representatives of European institutions, investors and stakeholders from the maritime and ocean sector, with the aim of exploring new opportunities for collaboration and funding.
As part of the institutional agenda, the Foundation also took part in a meeting at the Delegation of the Government of Catalonia in Brussels to highlight the importance of the fisheries sector within the blue economy. The Foundation maintains that fisheries are part of the blue economy and that European regulations should take into account the reality and the strategic role of the fisheries sector in the sustainable development of maritime territories.
One of the key moments of the agenda was the meeting with Andreea Strachinescu, Head of Unit at the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the European Commission. During the meeting, we presented the Foundation and the DCC-SOE – Barcelona Ocean Economy as strategic partners to drive actions linked to maritime innovation, marine knowledge and investment.
The event was opened by Esther Borràs, Delegate of the Government of Catalonia in Brussels, and included an address by Antoni Abad, President of the fishermen’s guild. The closing remarks were delivered by the Molt Honorable Minister for Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food, Òscar Ordeig.
Participation in this leading European forum makes it possible to strengthen Barcelona’s international positioning as a hub for innovation in the blue economy, as well as to continue the strategic contacts promoted by the DCC-SOE – Barcelona Ocean Economy office.
This working agenda has also helped to identify new avenues for cooperation and European funding linked to maritime innovation, marine sustainability and the development of an ocean economy aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.
With this presence in Brussels, the Foundation continues working to connect the Barcelona maritime ecosystem with the main European initiatives, fostering partnerships that contribute to the development of an innovative, sustainable blue economy with international reach.
