Barcelona has been chosen by UNESCO as the headquarters of the new Ocean Decade Collaborative Centre (DCC-SOE)<\/strong>, a collaborative center that will aim to promote a sustainable and equitable ocean economy, within the framework of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030<\/strong>, known as the Ocean Decade.<\/p>\n<\/div>

This center positions Barcelona as a world reference in the blue economy<\/strong>, being the first city to lead one of the ten global challenges set by the initiative. Its activity will focus specifically on challenge number 4: fostering a sustainable ocean economy. The DCC-SOE will be operational at least until 2030 and will depend on the Barcelona Capital N\u00e0utica Foundation<\/strong>, which will act as the implementing partner. <\/p>\n

The project is the result of a joint effort led by the Barcelona City Council<\/strong>, in collaboration with the Port of Barcelona<\/strong>, the Government of Catalonia<\/strong>, the CSIC \u2013 Institute of Marine Sciences<\/strong>, BlueNetCat<\/strong> and with the support of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>

An international hub for the blue economy<\/h3><\/div>

According to 2021 data, the blue economy in Catalonia represents a business volume of \u20ac15,000 million<\/strong>, with 104,000 jobs<\/strong>. In Barcelona, it accounts for 4.3% of GDP and 1.4% of employment. The sector includes activities such as maritime logistics, fishing, tourism, marine energy, and biotechnology. <\/p>\n

The new center is integrated into a broader strategy that includes projects such as the Maritime Technology Park<\/strong>, the BlueTechPort<\/strong> and the Barcelona Sea of Science<\/strong>, with a joint investment of \u20ac142 million<\/strong> and an area of 45,000 m\u00b2 on the coastline.<\/p>\n<\/div>

All these sailors represent the Base Mini Barcelona, consolidating the club’s prestige in national and international competitions and demonstrating that Catalan sailing continues to have a prominent presence in the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Catalonia, a pioneer in maritime policy<\/h3><\/div>

The Government of Catalonia has been a pioneer in Spain by approving its own Maritime Strategy<\/strong> and multiple actions recognized by UNESCO within the Ocean Decade. The 2023-2026 Plan provides for more than 330 actions<\/strong>, many of them focused on the blue economy. <\/p>\n
